There have been several moments recently where I’ve been taken back to days long passed. Something happened that triggered a memory, or someone said, “Remember when …”

Today, after getting home from work, I went past Craig’s room to hear the song “Auld Lang Syne”. That immediately brought back images of days very long gone, of ringing in the New Year. Standing, or in my case, sitting, with arms crossed, holding hands with family members, belting out the lines of “Auld Lang Syne” that I did know and just reveling in the moment for the rest of it. I never did know all the words.

The festive season is almost upon us once again. Many will be caught up in the commercial aspect of it all. For our family, this may be the last one spent together. Next year will once again see us scattered to the winds, but less likely to be able to gather for future celebrations.

Somewhere along the line, the tradition of “Auld Lang Syne” fell away. I think we even stopped ringing in the New Year. Moving away from home changed a lot of things for me over the years.

This year would be really great if we could step back in time. Just one last time. Stay up until Midnight. Shout “Happy New Year” and then sing that old forgotten song. And then wish Mum a wonderful Happy Birthday and be glad that she is with us another year.

Love you, Mum. Miss you lots.
